Brown to start emergency planning consulting businessDENVER, Colorado (AP) — Former FEMA Director Michael Brown, heavily criticized for his agency’s slow response to Hurricane Katrina, is starting a disaster preparedness consulting firm to help clients avoid the sort of errors that cost him his job.

"If I can help people focus on preparedness, how to be better prepared in their homes and better prepared in their businesses — because that goes straight to the bottom line — then I hope I can help the country in some way," Brown told the Rocky Mountain News for its Thursday editions.

Brown said officials need to "take inventory" of what’s going on in a disaster to be able to answer questions to avoid appearing unaware of how serious a situation is.

’Bomb Jazeera’ memo: Media warnedLONDON, England (CNN) — The British government has warned news organizations against publishing details of a secret memo which one London tabloid newspaper said recounted discussions between Prime Minister Tony Blair and President Bush about bombing the headquarters of the Arabic news network Al-Jazeera.

The Daily Mirror reported Tuesday that Blair talked Bush out of launching an air strike against Al-Jazeera’s headquarters in Qatar — a U.S. ally — during a 2004 meeting at the White House.

The White House called the report "outlandish," but Al-Jazeera urged the British government to either confirm or deny the report. Continue reading »

An Iraqi soldier rides past graffiti in central Baghdad, Iraq, which reads "Down USA."(CNN) — Despite calls in Washington and Iraq to pull out foreign troops, the U.S. general in charge of helping Iraq create an army says training troops to replace coalition forces cannot be rushed.

"We are moving at a measured pace," Army Gen. Martin Dempsey told CNN. "We want this army over time to be representative, to be cohesive, to be a role model for the potential of what could work for the rest of society," he said.

President George W. Bush on November 19 rejected Democratic calls to begin steps to withdraw U.S. forces from Iraq, in part because Iraqi forces are not yet able to defend the country on their own.

Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari attends a conference in Cairo, Egypt, designed to unite Iraqi politicians.CAIRO, Egypt (AP) — Reaching out to the Sunni Arab community, Iraqi leaders called for a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces and said Iraq’s opposition had a "legitimate right" of resistance.

The communique — finalized by Shiite, Kurdish and Sunni leaders Monday — condemned terrorism but was a clear acknowledgment of the Sunni position that insurgents should not be labeled as terrorists if their operations do not target innocent civilians or institutions designed to provide for the welfare of Iraqi citizens.

The leaders agreed on "calling for the withdrawal of foreign troops according to a timetable, through putting in place an immediate national program to rebuild the armed forces … control the borders and the security situation" and end terror attacks.

Vice President Dick Cheney on Monday praised Rep. John Murtha as "my friend and former colleague."WASHINGTON (CNN) — Vice President Dick Cheney continued the Bush administration’s efforts Monday to pull back on attacks against a decorated war veteran who called for the near-term withdrawal of U.S. troops in Iraq.

But Cheney, in a speech in Washington, excoriated lawmakers who say the United States misused intelligence in the lead-up to the war, calling such complaints "dishonest and reprehensible."

"A few politicians are suggesting these brave Americans were sent into battle for a deliberate falsehood. This is revisionism of the most corrupt and shameless variety. It has no place anywhere in American politics, much less in the United States Senate," he told the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative think tank.
